This one day public-facing symposium will examine C.S. Lewis’s vision(s) of last things, exploring his depictions of the end in works such as The Narnia ChroniclesThe Cosmic Trilogy, and throughout his fiction. We will also explore Lewis’s sense of the end in his non-fiction—in his essays, letters, and theological writings. Lewis scholars— at every career stage, and from around the world— will engage with this fascinating topic from a variety of perspectives to suit their research specialisms.

Distinguished keynote speakers - Prof Emeritus Jerry Root, Rev Dr Malcolm Guite and other leading lights in the world of C.S. Lewis scholarship - will take us on an exciting journey, exploring the myriad ways C.S. Lewis and his work can help us make sense, not merely of the end, but of the entirety of our story.

Jerry Root

Jerry Root is the Christopher W. Mitchell Senior Fellow for C.S. Lewis Studies at the C.S. Lewis Institute; Emeritus Professor of Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois and a visiting Professor at Biola University. He received his Ph.D. from the Open University through the Oxford Centre for Missions Studies. Jerry has nine published books, as well as numerous articles and publications about C. S. Lewis and evangelism in other books, journals, and periodicals, as well as read numerous academic papers at various academic venues. Recently, he published, Splendour in the Dark, a book about C. S. Lewis’s narrative poem Dymer (the book also includes Lewis’s 100-page poem). Jerry has lectured on Lewis topics at 79 Universities in 19 different countries.  

Malcolm Guite

Malcolm Guite, Author, is a Life Fellow of Girton College, Cambridge, and writes the weekly Poet’s Corner column for the Church Times. He is the author of several books including Mariner: A voyage with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Love Remember: 40 poems of loss, lament and hope, and David’s Crown: Sounding the Psalms. Guite earned degrees from Cambridge and Durham universities. His research interests include the intersection of religion and the arts, and the examination of the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Owen Barfield, and British poets such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He was a Bye-Fellow and chaplain of Girton College, Cambridge and associate chaplain of St Edward King and Martyr in Cambridge.
